On May 26, 2024, the Hokuto Flag All Japan Championships showcased elite martial artists, and Kyokushin fighter Senpai Jo Miyahara emerged victorious. He claimed the Best Winner Award (Hokuto Flag) by winning the over-260 category. Unlike traditional weight-based divisions, this championship ranks athletes by Physical Index (PI)—a combination of an athlete’s weight in kilograms and height in centimeters.

Senpai Jo Miyahara’s Martial Arts Achievements

Miyahara is a Kyokushin Karate champion with numerous prestigious titles. His accolades include:

  • All Japan Champion (2016, 2018)
  • WFKO Yamburg Cup Champion (2016, 2024)
  • KWU World Championship Medalist (2019)
  • KWF World Championship Medalist (2018)
  • Eurasia Open Champion (2016)

This was not his first participation in a Kūdō championship, but his latest victory cements his reputation as a versatile martial artist. After only two years of Kūdō training, he has also enhanced his wrestling skills, securing a win with an armbar cross in the Canto Region preliminaries.

What is Kūdō? The Hybrid Martial Art

Kūdō (空道, Kūdō) is a Japanese hybrid martial art that blends Kyokushin Karate, Judo, and other combat styles. Created by Azuma Takashi in 1981, it was originally known as Daido Juku and later renamed Kūdō in 2001. This full-contact combat sport integrates:

  • Stand-up striking (influenced by Muay Thai, Boxing, and Karate)
  • Throwing and grappling techniques (from Judo and Jiu-Jitsu)
  • Restraints, locks, and chokeholds, making it a versatile discipline

Recognized as a Budo sport in Japan, Kūdō emphasizes both safety and practicality, using headgear and gloves to allow fighters to engage in realistic yet protected combat.

Conclusion

Senpai Jo Miyahara’s dominance in Kyokushin Karate, Kūdō, and SENSHI highlights his remarkable adaptability. His victory at the Hokuto Flag All Japan Championships is yet another milestone in his illustrious career. As he prepares to train the next generation at the XVIII International Martial Arts Summer Camp, he continues to embody the spirit of a modern warrior.
