Leaders of KWU SENSHI: Legends Who Conquered the ‘100 Men’ Kumite Challenge
The world-renowned instructors of the KWU SENSHI International Martial Arts Summer Camp—Shihan Akira Masuda, Shihan Francisco Filho, and Sensei Tariel Nikoleishvili—are legends not only in martial arts but also in having passed the legendary Hyaku Nin Kumite (‘100 Men’) challenge in Kyokushin Karate. These elite fighters have achieved greatness by completing one of the most grueling tests in the sport, earning them recognition as icons of perseverance, skill, and spirit.
The 100-Men Kumite Challenge: A Test of True Strength
The ‘100 Men Kumite’ is a monumental challenge in Kyokushin Karate that only a few elite fighters have been able to conquer. Created by Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin, this test pushes fighters beyond their limits, transforming their bodies and spirits into steel. The challenge consists of fighting 100 opponents in succession, each sparring round lasting approximately 2 minutes. Fighters must win at least 50% of the matches and recover quickly from falls, with only 5 seconds allowed to get back up.
Shihan Akira Masuda: 12th to Complete the Kumite
Shihan Akira Masuda, known as ‘The Last Samurai’, completed the ‘100 Men Kumite’ challenge in 1991 in just 3 hours and 22 minutes. His achievement marked him as one of the toughest and most respected martial artists. As the President of KWU SENSHI, Masuda’s career includes a 2nd place finish at the 1991 World Championships and a 3rd place finish at the 1987 Open World Championships.
Shihan Francisco Filho: Twice a Champion of the Kumite
Shihan Francisco Filho, a Brazilian legend, completed the challenge twice—once in Brazil and again in Japan in 1995. Filho has an extensive career in martial arts, including being a 2-time K-1 Grand Prix Champion and President of KWU SENSHI South America. He also mentors young fighters and officiates at SENSHI international events.
Sensei Tariel Nikoleishvili: Last to Complete the Challenge in 2014
Sensei Tariel Nikoleishvili, a Georgian martial artist, was one of the last to complete the grueling challenge in 2014. Nikoleishvili’s impressive career includes being the 2011 Absolute World Champion and Champion of Japan in 2010. He is also a member of the Board of KWU SENSHI Europe and trains young talent worldwide.
