Insights from Shihan Akira Masuda on Kyokushin and Self-Defense (video)

In an interview below, Shihan Akira Masuda shared his unique approach to Kyokushin karate training. Unlike traditional Kyokushin sessions, the training on this occasion included techniques that mimicked knife or sword usage. Shihan Masuda explained that these techniques prepare students for potential real-life situations involving armed opponents, such as facing someone with a knife or a stick. He emphasized that, especially for older practitioners, self-defense training is crucial, as strength diminishes with age.

When asked about the shift from traditional martial arts to modern combat sports like MMA and Muay Thai, Shihan Masuda highlighted Kyokushin’s role as the “root” or foundation for many fighters’ professional careers. Just as a tree cannot flourish without strong roots, fighters cannot reach their full potential without Kyokushin’s discipline and grounding. He expressed his belief that Kyokushin fosters deep growth, which can lead to long-term success, not just short-term victories.

On the 20th edition of the SENSHI event, Shihan Masuda praised the initiative’s potential but urged the team to work more cohesively toward a shared goal. He hopes that through this collective effort, Kyokushin will continue to grow and strengthen.

The conversation concluded with Shihan Masuda comparing Kyokushin to a garden, where each student is a seed that must be nurtured. According to him, Kyokushin helps individuals realize their true potential, offering them a path to growth and self-discovery.
